‘Do the work’ is the ultimate lifehack.

‘Do the work’ is the ultimate lifehack. Margaret Atwood is very fond of quoting Dame Joan Sutherland, the celebrated Australian soprano, on this. When an interviewer asked Sutherland to what she attributed her success she said: “Bloody hard work, duckie!” No shortcut beats blood, sweat, and tears. If you take a shortcut you learn nothing. Keep your head down. Do the work. Learn from your mistakes. Get better. That’s what counts. I say this as a slacker. I say this as someone who wants people to think that they’re incredibly lazy. I can’t be bothered to take an easy way out if it takes longer in the long run. It’s just not worth the effort. If you skip the part where you do the hard work then you have nothing to show for it afterwards. Whereas if you do the hard work then you still have experience even if things don’t work out. ‘Do the work’ works like a charm every time.
